The corrected board says these four finish eleventh through fourteenth. It is right about Octomore for the reason it gives, right about Regular Human Bartender for one it cannot see, roughly right about jzstephens by accident, and flatly wrong about Calabash — wrong in a direction this league's own history already settled. That is a good hit rate. It is still not a verdict.
One thing binds all four: 14 quarterbacks sit on benches across this league, and these four teams hold five of them plus a spare defence. Six of their twenty-four bench spots are occupied by men who cannot enter a lineup in a normal week. You are not paid for depth at a position that starts one.
1676 and thirteenth, against sixth on the raw board, and the entire gap is two picks: a kicker at 103 carrying the largest reach flag on any kicker, and a defence at 117 that projects 187.
The correction halves kicker and defence because outside projections over-weight them. This league's own history disagrees with the direction of that. Pooled across two completed seasons, started weeks only, the spread from first to fourteenth is 4.9 ppg at defence and 3.9 at kicker — about 124 points a season, and larger than the outside proxies, because no outside feed prices the punt-return yards this scoring hands to defences at a receiver's rate.
Two caveats stay attached, because the staff telling says they must: those are started weeks only, so a manager benching a bad matchup flatters the average, and n is 19 and 26.
So: he is not being punished for a mistake. He is being punished by a model that does not read this league's rulebook — by a hand-set constant nobody has calibrated.
He is still in trouble, for a reason nobody has mentioned. He rosters two running backs. Two. Against a mandatory slot, fourteen weeks running, with three quarterbacks on the bench. One hamstring and there is no legal optimal lineup on his own roster.
Ninth to thirteenth. The interval is one injury wide.
COACH PROFILE — Barrett Sloam. Nineteen years a special-teams coordinator, elevated in what the front office still describes as a clerical matter. Holds that the game is won on field position and has assembled the evidence to prove it. Signature failure — owns the second-best kicker and the second-best defence in the league and two running backs, and refers to this arrangement, without irony, as balance.
Draft slot 1 in a linear order is the best seat in the league, and he used the first three picks well. His live draft added more to his starting six than anybody's.
Then he left without a kicker and paid a starting running back to get one.
But here is the thing the board cannot show you, and it is my favourite number this week. The case against Zay Flowers is Derrick Henry: 11 receptions inside the ten-yard line for Flowers across two years, against 71 carries inside the ten for Henry.
He starts both. That is not a hedge. That is a negative correlation, purchased at retail, and installed precisely where the points are scored. Tenth to thirteenth.
COACH PROFILE — Hollis Kemp. Coached competitive debate for two decades and can argue either side of any roster decision, including his own. Signature failure — traded his second-best running back for a man who kicks, defended it on field position, was challenged, then argued the opposing case so persuasively that the beat writer changed his story twice.
The prettiest draft line in the league: four late picks, four value flags, +33, +24, +15 and +37.
Slip measures the order a player went against his market rank. Market rank is a price. Every one of those four is a player the market had already marked down, which is exactly why they were still there. A thing on sale in the ninth round is on sale for a reason, and thirty years in liquidation will teach you to ask which one.
The real problem is not the bench anyway, it is the starting lineup: two receiving-flex bodies BDGE ranks below their ADP, and an RB1 who is a three-way analyst split. Ninth to twelfth — and Lamar and Lamb are a real spine, so one receiver breaking moves him three places.
COACH PROFILE — Gil Thurber. Thirty years in retail liquidation. Will not pay retail for anything, including talent, and has a laminated card explaining why. Signature failure — has never once, in three decades, asked why the item was on sale.
28.2 years old on average, nearly two above the league mean. Three of his four receivers are 30, 32 and 33; the fourth is an unproven rookie.
Everyone will bring up the rookie quarterback taken in the twelfth round at −247 VOR behind an entrenched starter. It is the worst pick in the draft by a factor of two and it is not why he finishes last. It cost him one bench spot. One.
He finishes last because both receiving-flex seats are filled by a live fade and the single cleanest cross-show disagreement in the league — the Ballers are mixed and cooling — brittle at thirty-three, a quad already — while BDGE calls his ADP patently absurd and is plus-23 on him. One of those shows is wrong about this man's season and nothing resolves it before it happens.
Kelce at 174 is the biggest value flag on the board, measured against a slot he does not have. Eleventh to fourteenth, and it is the only bottom-end call in this piece I would defend at the bottom.
One last thing, since I promised there was no free lunch. The correction that moved Calabash from sixth to thirteenth is a hand-set constant — a 0.5 shrink applied to kicker and defence value — multiplied against a per-game average taken from started weeks only. Neither number has been calibrated against this league. The corrected board is not free either. Nothing is.
COACH PROFILE — Prentiss Voyles. Was once on a staff with a man who had met Marchibroda, and will tell you. Philosophy: veteran leadership, applied until the locker room qualifies for a group discount. Signature failure — the only young man he has ever trusted was a rookie quarterback he took in the twelfth round, behind a starter who cannot be displaced, because "the arm reminded me of somebody," and he has declined every opportunity to say of whom.
